Distil Showcase 08

by Karen Marshalsay - 10:57 on 13 November 2008

So, I know, I'm not a good blogger, it's been ages... Anyway I just wanted to share my experiences leading up to the Distil Showcase on Saturday, and say huge thanks to those energetic and visionary guys Simon Thoumire and Dave Francis for setting it all up, and to Eddie McGuire and Rick Taylor for their help and advice. And, of course, huge thanks to the two players Colin Steele on trumpet and Mary McCarthy on piano for taking it on and bringing their own special talents and exquisite tones to the piece. I learned a lot from them in rehearsals and they've given me lots of ideas for the future too.

The Distil Showcase is kind of like an end of year round up of what folks have been experimenting with in composition terms. I wrote a piece called Winter Sun, for trumpet and piano, exploring the thoughts and emotions since the death of my father and linking it to the wonderful quality of light you get in winter when the sun can be either blindingly bright or reassuringly quiet and reflective.

There were 7 other pieces, all very varied in style and line up, by Dave Milligan, Andy Thorburn, Simon Thoumire, Matt Seattle, Wendy Stewart, Conrad Molleson and Sandy Stanage.

So here's to next year!
