Success in Distil Showcase
Success in Distil Showcase Karen's new piece Thomas the Rhymer was successfully premiered at the Distil Showcase at the Tolbooth in Stirling on Friday night. In addition to border pipes, accordion, soprano sax and bass clarinet, and strings the piece features both bray harp and modern gut clarsach with the Scotsman noting that the piece "contrasted the buzzing sonority of the ancient bray harp with a modern clarsach to good effect". The 13 minute piece was performed by Karen along with Sarah Wilson violin; Mairi Campbell viola, violin; Christine Hanson cello; Iain Macinnes border pipes and whistles; Dick Lee saxophone and bass clarinet, under the musical direction of Rick Taylor. Karen has been involved with the Distil initiative since participating on the second weekend retreat, and previously had a chamber piece (Culross) worked on as part of a work in progress rehearsal conducted by Dave Heath. Other composers showcased at the Tolbooth were James Ross, Catriona Mckay, John Dipper, Sandy Stanage, Lori Watson and Conrad Ivitsky.
