15 January 2019Women In Their Own Write Harp Course
Karen is teaching a weekend course on 6th & 7th April as part of the Edinburgh International Harp Festival aimed at elementary/intermediate players. There will be two sessions each day 1-2.30pm and 4.30-6pm
Focusing mainly on Scottish and Gaelic tunes and airs, we will look at music written by Scottish women at various points in history. There are many female tunesmiths and composers working in the traditional scene today but this course will introduce you to the work of those who went before. Essential elements of arranging – harmony, voicings, rhythms and ornamentation will be explored in these new arrangements. Written music will be provided from the start if wished but the course will also be taught phrase by phrase by ear, accommodating all levels of reading and learning styles.
The course costs £68 and can be booked here
15 January 2019Works by Women
Karen is delivering a one hour informal talk/demonstration on works written by women from various time periods and cultures to inspire and encourage you to add more female composers to your repertoire and programmes. Using recordings, live performance, audio/visual presentation and handouts, Karen will introduce you to the music of female composers from the past who deserve to be heard today. If you’d like to bring your harp, we will end by playing Dame Ethel Smyth’s Suffragette anthem, The March of the Women arranged by Karen to celebrate 100 years of votes for women. (Music available at the Festival.)
