Harp Teachingkaren leading a workshop for the glasgow branch of the clarsach society

Karen teaches both children and adults at all levels - offering both individual and group lessons, giving instruction in a variety of harp styles including fingerpad technique for gut-strung instruments, fingernail techniques such as those from the Robert ap Huw manuscript (suitable for various types of harp), and gut-strung levered clarsach, wire-strung, bray and Paraguayan harp techniques.

Regular lessons are available in the Edinburgh area - contact Karen for more details.

Workshops and other activities can take place anywhere - check out the News pages and calendar for events, or contact Karen if you'd like to organise an event.

Wire-Strung Harp Tuition

As well as individual lessons, Karen co-leads a monthly workshop in Edinburgh for the Wire Branch of the Clarsach Society, alternating each month with Bill Taylor. Check here for dates and more info. This is a mixed ability group and all types of wire harps are welcome. If you can't make the workshop then the materials - sheet music and recordings are available to buy here.

Skype and distance learning

Karen now offers lessons via Skype, giving students who might live too far from a teacher the opportunity for regular lessons, as well as for anyone who wishes to either work regularly with Karen or have one-off sessions on specific topics or tunes. Paypal makes payment easy for students outwith the UK.

Karen is developing materials and learning packages for those who would benefit from working this way. These can be used in conjunction with Skype lessons or completely separate. There are several wire-strung arrangements available to buy which provide a pdf of the notation plus audio files (mp3) of the tunes played slowly. These are delivered by email. Karen is currently recording some 'lessons' on these pieces - ie talking the student through the piece, demonstrating on the harp while talking about fingering and other issues. It may also be possible to make some of this available as video files. Please get in touch if you would be interested in working in this way.
